Latest Bill Looks Set to Expand New York Sports Betting Options

New York’s online sports betting market was launched back on January 8th, 2022. Since then, the Big Apple has broken numerous online sports betting records, introduced more sportsbooks to the state, and now sees the potential for mobile kiosks to be launched at pro sports venues, auto racing facilities, and so on.

Latest Bill Looks Set to Expand New York Sports Betting Options

The NY State Senate Bill S7536 is sponsored by State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jnr, and was unanimously approved by the New York Senate Racing, Gaming and Wagering Committee on February 14th, 2022. The passing of the bill will allow online sportsbooks to set up mobile kiosks at professional sports venues, horse racing tracks, off-track betting sites, video lottery terminals, and auto racing facilities.

Online sports betting in New York is already off to a phenomenal start, smashing New Jersey’s previous National record of total handle across a single month. Caesars is currently the Big Apple’s preferred sports betting destination, followed closely by FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM.

New York State Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow from District 89 previously expressed his concerns regarding the tribes' non-involvement in future gambling deals.

”I would challenge it if I was the Native Americans. I would challenge it even if I was a potential affiliate. Everyone hates the governor’s plan except the governor and the budget director. I don’t understand why they’re so weighted to this program, but they are so this is what we have to live with. As legislators, we’re not able to change the governor’s budget. We can only take away, we can’t add anything. He can just say, ‘I’m not negotiating, do my budget or take stuff out,’ and that’s it.”

When discussing New York’s meteoric rise to becoming online sports betting record-breakers, State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jnr said

“We had confidence it was going to be a success, but to be able to break the national record of total handle for sports betting in a single month in our very first month, with primarily only six sportsbooks, is both rewarding and promising… Breaking this record proves that New York was ready for mobile sports betting and we are providing our state with new significant revenue, educational and addiction funding source.”

The latest bill looks set to bind the successes of the retail and online sports betting world together and moves onto the Senate Finance Committee for final consideration.

Unfortunately for sports bettors across the Big Apple, the latest meeting (held on Monday) was focused on the 2022 Economic & Revenue Consensus Forecasting, meaning sports bettors will have to make use of their preferred NY mobile apps for a little while longer before the S7536 is officially passed.
