Mets Star Pete Alonso Bounces Back After Serious Car Crash

Record-breaking Alonso signs new Mets contract

The New York Mets first baseman, Pete Alonso, appears to have fully recovered after a serious car crash earlier this month. Alonso’s truck rolled over multiple times when it was hit by another vehicle that ran a red light in Tampa, Florida. The ‘Polar Bear’ said that he was blessed and thankful to be alive and has successfully returned to training.

Alonso had been driving to the Mets camp in Port St. Lucie at the time and somehow survived the crash uninjured. He had to kick out his windshield to escape the vehicle and the dramatic images of Alonso’s wrecked pick-up were shared on Instagram by his wife, Haley, who had been following in another vehicle.

Why Alonso is essential for the Mets’ future

Alonso first really hit the headlines in the baseball world when he set the major league home run record for rookies in 2019. The 224 home runs hit also set a franchise record and it looks unlikely that any Mets players will break the record anytime soon. As such, it’s little surprise that the Mets have just signed up the first baseman to a one-year $7.4 million contract to avoid arbitration.

The Mets had a fairly mediocre 2021 MLB campaign having languished behind the Braves and Phillies in the NL East with a 77-85 record. It’s hard to see many New York sportsbooks offering shorter odds this time around.

The offseason saw the Mets adding Starling Marte and Mark Canha to the mix, but neither of these players are likely to be heavy-hitters. Hopes are high that Francisco Lindor might come good after finally producing some home runs at the end of the 2021 season, but it looks like Alonso is going to be carrying the weight.

All of this has been made worse as a result of the Mets letting players like Michael Conforto and Javier Baez go as free agents this offseason. While J.D. Davis and Dominic Smith can sometimes pick up plenty of singles and doubles, consistency has been a real issue with the pair.

Obviously there is more to MLB success than just picking up the home runs, and the reliance on Alonso doesn’t necessarily mean that the Mets have a badly-weighted roster. But with few other players having Alonso’s consistency in picking up home runs, Mets fans will be all the more grateful that ‘the Polar Bear’ successfully escaped what could have been a brutal car crash. All of which means that baseball fans will once again get to use their New York betting apps to wager on Alonso having another massive season.
