It is important to note that our odds, bonuses, and sportsbooks reviews are based on our findings across the Empire State. Like we’ve mentioned before, we aim to become your go-to-site for all things gambling in New York.
So, let’s start at the beginning! The New York Jets were founded back in 1959, originally named the Titans of New York. They made use of this name up until 1963, just before the AFL and NFL merger in 1970. The Jets play in the very competitive American Football Conference (AFC) East, alongside rivals New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills, and Miami Dolphins. Unsurprisingly, the New York Giants are another big rival of the Jets, with whom they share the MetLife Stadium.
Back in 1959, Harry Wismer stated that the city was ready for another football team to join the ranks and, after being granted the charter franchise, would look set to create the Titans of New York. Why Titans of New York, you ask? Apparently, because “Titans are bigger and stronger than Giants”.
Unfortunately, by ‘63 a great debt was looming over the team and inevitably had to be sold. Saved by a five-man syndicate led by Sonny Werblin, the New York Jets, as we know them today, were officially born.
By 1969, the New York Jets, led by QB Joe Namath, had made their way to the Super Bowl III final. The side ran out winners against a heavily favored Baltimore Colts team.
After the AFL and NFL merger, the Jets had a string of poor seasons up until the 1980s. Cue the New York Sack Exchange and a 1982 AFC Championship game appearance. The New York Sack Exchange were aptly named, securing 53.5 sacks throughout the campaign. Klecko, who contributed towards 20.5 of those sacks, was later named the Defensive Player of the year.
The 1990s saw the Jets fall back into a poor run of form. After a succession of negative seasons, ex-Patriots head coach, Bill Parcells, was hired by the Jets. In 1998, Parcells led the team to its first AFC Championship game in nearly 20 years. At the end of the ‘99 season, after securing a record eight game winning streak, Parcells stepped down as HC.
The position was open for Bill Belichick; however, at his induction, a note was left which read “ I resign as HC of the NYJ”. We all know where he went, and what he achieved, next!
The Jets reached the playoffs five times throughout the noughties, including 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2009. A record that is yet to be broken. In 2009 and 2010, NYJ made it to the AFC Championship game. As we make our way into 2023, the Jets are yet to reach the AFC Championship game or the playoffs since.
The Jets stats for last season were not entirely convincing. At 4-13, there is plenty of work to be done in the offseason if a Jets playoffs run is to be on the cards.
With a solid understanding of the Jets history now under your belt, let us take you through the many different ways you can take advantage of this newfound knowledge, and discuss the types of New York Jets betting markets open to you.
The moneyline bet is the most straightforward of all wagers to understand. In its simplest form, the moneyline requires you to select who you believe will be the overall winner of the matchup.
Generally, NY sports betting sites will allocate an underdog and a favorite to each fixture. Unless, of course, the match is too evenly matched. The underdog will be depicted by a +, and the favorite will be depicted by a -.
For example, if there was a New York Jets game today, the Jets betting line may look as follows:
New York Jets (+200) vs Buffalo Bills (-150)
The odds relating to the underdog are based on what you would receive, per $100 wagered. The odds relating to the favorite highlight how much you would need to wager in order to win $100.
So, in the above instance, bettors that placed a $100 wager on the NY Jets could look to win $200 provided the Jets win. For those who opted to back the Bills, they would need to wager $150 in order to win $100.
Following on nicely from the above, spreads look to extend on the simplistic moneyline by adding in a negative or positive handicap. Much like Jet moneylines, bettors will be looking to select who they believe will be the winner of the matchup. However, instead of simply choosing the “better” team, each team will be also gifted or deducted a set amount of points.
For example, if you were to search for a Jets point spread when playing the Giants, you may see something as follows:
New York Jets +3 (+110) vs New York Giants -3 (+110)
As you can see, the sportsbook has bridged the gap between the two teams by adding, or subtracting, points from them. This amendment has created a much more balanced fixture which is why you will also note that the New York Jets and New York Giants odds are exactly the same
Using the above example, any wagers on the Jets would be successful provided the Jets lost by no more than 2 points. On the other hand, those who wagered on the Giants would need to ensure that they had beat the Jets by 4 or more points in order to redeem their profits.
New York Jets totals, also known as New York Jets Over/Unders, may not focus on the winner of the match; however, they do still focus on the outcome of the match.
The combined points total of both teams is what we are looking at here - calculating whether the final score of both teams combined will be over, or under, a set amount of points. Sounds simple enough? That’s because it is!
If the New York Jets happened to be playing the Cincinnati Bengals, an over/under wager may look as follows:
New York Jets vs Cincinnati Bengals
Over 42.5 (+210) / Under 42.5 (-250)
In the above example, bettors who believed the match would see a combined total of fewer than 42.5 points would need to wager $250 in order to win $100. Those who believed more than 42.5 points would be scored must wager $100 to win $210.
If you’ve ever made use of one of the best NFL betting sites NY has to offer, then we are confident that you will have come across the above three types of bet. However, there is a whole world of sports betting markets that do not directly relate to the outcome of that match, too, also known as props.
Jets prop betting could focus on any individual or team event that could occur within 80 minutes. For example, bettors could place a stake on whether they believe Jamison Crowder is going to score the first touchdown, whether Michael Carter is going to rush over 100 yards, or whether the defense is going to cause the most fumbles. As you can see, although these wagers will have an impact on the match itself, they do not directly relate to the end result.
Jets futures will primarily revolve around their chances of winning the AFC East, making it to playoffs, making it to the Super Bowl, or winning the Super Bowl.
As the name suggests, futures can be placed on events that are a long way off, leading right up to the event itself. Over time, bettors will find the odds increase or decrease depending on their performance. If you are planning on finding the best NY Jets playoff odds, then the start of the season is always a good place to start - just bear in mind that there is little in the way of evidence surrounding how well the team has gelled during the offseason. Often, sports bettors will wait to see who has been drafted and traded before making any assumptions on how the Jets season will pan out.
